Hand lettering and calligraphy went from being something I really enjoyed doing in my spare time to a new design skill that I could incorporate into my day job designing prints + patterns. I started learning various forms of calligraphy as something to challenge myself design wise but also to give me something to physically create with pen and paper, versus being on a computer. Hand lettering really helped to fill a need to create using my hands and ended up sparking a new wave of design ideas that I was able to incorporate into my day to day design work. Below is an assortment from my various sketchbooks showcasing formal styles of calligraphy as well as playing with more free-form hand lettering.
